Almost 18 years have passed since the release of one of the most important releases in Eastern Asian Black Metal history – and now it is finally going to be repressed, for the first time on vinyl! It is time for the “The Great Rites”-EP to finally get the deserved attention.

As soon as the needle touches the vinyl for the first time, one is being transported back to the old days, when Black Metal was defined. Cold hatred is matched with buzzing guitars and an unmistakable atmosphere. There is no doubt: This is a lecture that only could have been created by bands of the second wave of Black Metal and that should be a source of inspiration for more contemporary Black Metal acts from Scandinavia.

Eventually a slight chill will rise from the soil of your “A Blaze in the Northern Sky” because DARKTHRONEs infamous Fenriz was one of the first to notice the quality of NEBIRAS and has honored them by giving his regards in the booklet of said album. His letter exchange with Euronymous shows that Bandleader Agathos Daemon was no stranger to the Norwegian scene. Listening to “The Great Rites” one cannot miss the influences those two contacts had on the sound of NEBIRAS, when time and time again one is taken on a journey through the deepest woods of Norway. Not only did Agathos Daemon stay in contact with the Scandinavian forefathers, but also with the whole rising European Black Metal-scene, with bands such as SAMAEL and ROTTING CHRIST. Being the head of the Watchtower Fraternity Circle, which was the Malaysian counterpart of the famous Black Circle in Norway, Agathos Daemon formed a strong scene with RATOR, CONQUEROR (Mal) and BAZZAH.

Special thanks go out to Wan Syamsul of the Malaysian Deadhead-Zine and Afterlife Productions for making this release possible in the first place. Dunkelheit Produktionen is going to treat this task with the given respect. The release is dedicated to the former guitarist of NEBIRAS, Y. Occultust, who died in a car accident two years before the initial release of “The Great Rites”.

This important piece of Asian music history is presented as 180g vinyl incl. an A2-poster in an edition of 500 copies. The first 150 copies will be collector’s items on red vinyl and the remaining 350 copies will be issued in the most classic color of all: pitch black. The release is single-sided, presenting an occult emblem on the back, matching the aura of NEBIRAS in a perfect manner.

Nach über 18 Jahren wird eine wichtige Veröffentlichung des asiatischen Black Metals endlich neu aufgelegt, und erscheint nun erstmals auf Vinyl. Wir finden, es ist Zeit, dass die „The Great Rites“-EP von NEBIRAS die Aufmerksamkeit bekommt, die sie verdient hat.

Sobald die Plattenspielernadel das pechschwarze Vinyl zum ersten Mal berührt, wird man schlagartig in eine Zeit zurückversetzt, als der Black Metal definiert wurde. Kalter Hass trifft auf surrende Gitarren und eine Atmosphäre, die unverwechselbar ist. Sofort wird klar: Das hier ist eine achtzehn-minütige Lehrstunde, wie sie eigentlich nur von Black Metal Bands der zweiten Phase kreiert werden konnte und von der sich viele heutige skandinavische Bands inspirieren lassen sollten. 

Vermutlich steigen auch gerade feine Nebelschwaden aus eurer „A Blaze in the Northern Sky“ auf, denn Fenriz von DARKTHRONE hat bereits sehr früh die Qualität dieser Band erkannt und NEBIRAS namentlich im Booklet des Kultalbums verewigt. Dass Bandkopf Agathos Daemon kein Unbekannter in Norwegen war, zeigt sein früher Briefwechsel mit Euronymous. Unüberhörbar ist, dass diese beiden Kontakte auf das Klangbild von NEBIRAS abgefärbt haben, denn ein ums andere Mal fühlt man sich direkt nach Norwegen versetzt. Aber nicht nur mit den skandinavischen Größen hielt Agathos Daemon regen Kontakt, sondern viel mehr mit der gesamten europäischen Black-Metal-Szene, als sie noch im Entstehen begriffen war, so auch mit SAMAEL und ROTTING CHRIST.

Als Kopf hinter dem Watchtower Fraternity Zirkel, dem malaysischen Pendant zum norwegischen Black Circle, hielt Agathos Daemon die Fäden in der Hand und formte mit RATOR, CONQUEROR (Mal) und BAZZAH eine starke Szene.

Besonderer Dank gilt Wan Syamsul vom malaysischen Deadhead-Zine sowie Afterlife Productions, der diese Veröffentlichung überhaupt erst möglich gemacht hat. Dunkelheit Produktionen wird sich dieser Aufgabe mit dem nötigen Respekt annehmen. Gewidmet wird diese Veröffentlichung dem früheren Gitarristen Y. Occultust, der zwei Jahre vor der Erstveröffentlichung bei einem Autounfall verstarb. 

Dieses wichtige Stück asiatischer Musikgeschichte wird als 180g schweres Vinyl zusammen mit einem farbigen A2-Poster in einer Auflage von 500 Stück erscheinen. Die ersten 150 Kopien werden Sammlerstücke in blutrotem Vinyl, die restlichen 350 Einheiten erscheinen in klassischem schwarz. Die B-Seite enthält keine Musik, sondern ist mit einem okkulten Emblem bedruckt, das die Aura von NEBIRAS gebührend würdigt.
